Palm Tree Removal on the Gold Coast
Palm tree removal on the Gold Coast is priced mainly by palm height, the number of trunks and access. A published guide puts it at roughly $245 to $1,175 a palm, rising to $1,175 to $2,950 for a palm over 10 m or a Canary Island date palm, including GST. Send photos for a free quote.

How much does palm tree removal cost?
A published price guide puts Gold Coast palm removal at roughly $245 to $1,175 per palm, with a typical figure around $390. A palm over 10 m, or a Canary Island date palm of any height, runs $1,175 to $2,950. Both figures include GST, and the source and date are in the table below.
Canary Island date palms sit in their own band for good reason. They are enormously heavy for their height, the frond bases are armed with long spines that make climbing slow and hazardous, and the crown has to be taken apart carefully rather than dropped. Several hours of careful work goes into a palm that looks, from the footpath, like a short job.
What makes one palm dearer than another?
- Height. The main driver, as with any tree.
- Number of trunks. A clumping palm is effectively several removals in one.
- Species. Spined species such as Canary Island date palms are slower and riskier to climb.
- Access. Whether the fronds and trunk sections can be carried out, or have to be lowered over a pool, deck or roof first.
- What happens to the root ball. Grinding it out is usually a separate line in the quote.
Why is palm removal often cheaper than a tree the same height?
Palms are not woody trees. They have no spreading branch structure to dismantle and no broad hardwood stump, so a straight-trunked palm with clear access can often be taken down in sections quickly and cleanly. The root ball is also comparatively compact, which makes grinding it out faster than grinding a hardwood stump of the same apparent size.
That is a general pattern rather than a rule. A spined, multi-trunked palm leaning over a pool can easily cost more than a straightforward gum of similar height.
Do I need approval to remove a palm?
Possibly, and the test is about size and mapping, not species. The City of Gold Coast treats vegetation as assessable if it is more than 4 m in height, or if its trunk is more than 40 cm in circumference measured 1.3 m above the ground, and separately where the property carries a Vegetation Management Overlay. A mature palm will often clear the height threshold on its own.
Check your address on the council mapping before booking. The council tree removal rules guide sets out the thresholds, the exemptions and how to check.
Is the cocos palm a weed on the Gold Coast?
Not in the regulatory sense. The Queensland Government states that the cocos palm is not a prohibited or restricted invasive plant under the Biosecurity Act 2014. It also notes that it is a prolific seeder, spread by bats into gardens and bushland, and that it can invade riparian areas and dry eucalypt forest.
That matters for approval because one of the City of Gold Coast’s exemptions covers pest species as identified by a Level 3 Arborist. Whether a particular palm on your property falls under that exemption is a question for a qualified arborist looking at the plant, not something this page can answer in advance. Do not assume a cocos palm can be removed without checking.
Can palms be transplanted instead of removed?
Some can. Many palms transplant better than comparable broadleaf trees because of their root structure, and a healthy specimen in the right spot can be worth moving rather than destroying. It needs a machine that can lift the root ball intact, somewhere to put it, and a willingness to water it through establishment.
Whether it is worth doing depends on the species, the size and how far it has to travel. Ask when you get your quote, and mention that you would consider relocation and the arborist can tell you if the palm is a candidate.
Can you remove palms near a pool?
Yes, and on the Gold Coast it is routine. Palms planted for a tropical look end up dropping fronds and seed into pools for years afterwards, which is often exactly why they come out.
Flag the pool in your enquiry and include a photo. Protecting the water, the paving, the pool fence and any glass balustrade changes how the palm is dismantled, and it may mean lowering every section rather than dropping fronds.
Do you remove the root ball?
It can be ground out, and it is usually quoted as a separate line. A palm root ball is more contained than a hardwood stump, so grinding is generally quicker.
Say whether you want the ground left ready to returf or replant. As with stump grinding, you can leave the chip in place, have it carted away and the hole backfilled with soil, or keep it as mulch.
What about fronds and seed pods?
Fronds and seed heads are bulky but light, and they are normally chipped or bundled on site and taken away as part of the job. If the palm has been dropping seed for years, mention it: seedlings come up through nearby garden beds and lawn, and a clean-up is easier while the crew is already on site.

Common questions
Do you remove the palm root ball?
It can be ground out, and it is usually quoted as a separate line. Palms have no woody stump like a hardwood, so the root ball is generally easier to deal with than a tree stump of similar height. See palm removal and stump grinding.
